Russia’s interest in it’s mineral wealth started under the reign of Tsar Peter the Great 1672 -1725 who collected stones for his famous Cabinet of Curiosities out of which developed the Mining Institute and Museum in St. Petersburg . Catherine the Great and her grandsons Alexander Pavlovich and Nicholas Pavlovich funded this area discovering and cultivating the potential of these stones many of which are unique to Russian soil. This directory of Coloured Russian Stones should not be regarded as definitive but more as a preliminary guide as from time to time additional images will be added.
